What the Surface Was Already Measuring
They reached for materials of the future once the plateau held— quantum tech, electronics rewritten— as if a resistance that ignores how clean the film is were a device already waiting.
What was already there: a second harmonic, odd under time reversal, flat below about thirty kelvin, independent of temperature and of the scattering time. Not the disorder-driven bilinear. An in-plane field across the current breaks the cancellation over the Fermi contour; along the current, nothing. Gate the two faces and the weight of the answer shifts. The quantum metric — how fast the state changes when momentum changes — had been on the surface the whole time.
The leftover is both— the charge we had been counting on a conducting face, and the distance the state already turned when momentum turned.
I take what the surface was already measuring.
