Average of Stairs
A lithium-niobate nanomechanical resonator coupled to a superconducting qubit. Each phonon shifted the qubit by three hundred twenty-eight kilohertz.
Six consecutive parity checks heralded the one-phonon state at about eighty-five percent. Then two hundred ninety-four more checks on each trajectory, across eight thousand four hundred forty-seven runs.
Left alone, the excitation lived two point one milliseconds. Under the questions, about six hundred forty-nine microseconds.
The averaged ringdown still looks smooth. An individual history ends with a step: one to zero. Not every atom still — only the last countable excitation above zero-point motion.
Watched a phonon disappear is the paper’s own mouth, then qualified: inference from noisy qubit checks, Bayesian forward-backward, not a movie of sound going out.
Quantum-revolution is a late mouth. Phonon is a late mouth once the coordinated motion of many atoms is already doing that. Looking is the last countable excitation, and the step that only shows when you ask fast enough.
Ringdown already has the fade that was never a fade. The Continuous Ear already has the step and the continuous ear. The leftover is both: the jump that only shows when you ask fast enough, and the smooth fade that was always an average of stairs.
