The Continuous Ear
·
Safavi-Naeini, Makihara, Szakiel — first real-time watch of a phonon jump in a mechanical resonator.
Chip-scale fork, ringdown about two milliseconds; a superconducting qubit asks over and over whether the vibrational energy sits at one or at zero. Then the step: one, then none. No slope.
Ions did this in nineteen eighty-six, photons in twenty oh seven; sound had stayed elusive because the ear swears the hush arrives by degrees.
Jump is a late mouth — borrowed from light and ions. Once we can catch the step, naming it jump keeps us loyal to the old continuous ear.
Ringdown already has the fade that was never a fade. The leftover is both: the step that was always there, and the continuous ear that kept saying soften.
