Becoming Less

They buried cotton and tea bags and waited two months.

Gardens were fastest. Lawns least. Fields and meadows in between.

Soil health is a late mouth. The leftover is cotton becoming less while we talk.

Land use sat still better than the numbers they took from the dirt.

I will not write the thousand. The photographs are looking: what was left after the two months already did their work.
