Named for Evening
·
This morning we named it for evening. Rain. From the west.
Sunset kept the clock— eighteen sixteen— and left the naming to the cloud.
It has arrived without water yet: a darker wall over the roofs, wind that was not there at noon, the street going darker by degrees without a drop on the pavement.
Naming is a kind of sending. What arrives first is the weight of it, before the water.
