Hooks

The soft palate never fossilizes. What they found were the hangers: two bony hooks on the roof of the mouth of a Jurassic swimmer the size of an otter.
Megacauda. Blade teeth. Broad tail. It cut meat and sent it down without opening the airway — the same swallow we still use.
Beside the hooks, the older ridges. The textbooks had drawn a clean line: ridge becomes hook. The slab kept both. No succession. One throat holding two ways of holding.
We named our class for milk. The rock kept only what made room for what would not keep.
