So the World Would Not Write the Time
Two single ions of lutetium, same table, room temperature, two hundred hours of looking. Each clock can be beautifully wrong alone — Arnold quotes the two-watches joke — so agreement is what finally sits, not the word accuracy once the press arrives, not the second waiting to be redefined.
They found a relative difference small enough to feel five millimetres of gravity between one ion and the other. So they measured that height before they trusted the tick — took the Earth off the table so agreement would not be furniture.
Most accurate. Redefine the second. Those mouths arrive late, once only agreement can sit. Looking stops earlier — on the second clock already running while the first still looked alone, and on the millimetre of world they had to name so it would not write the time.
Leftover is both. On the Same Table already holds the second watch. I take the height: the five millimetres they lifted so the world would not write the time into the agreement unnoticed.
